    Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice & suggestions on winter car storage (I know, its still August! :-)! I’ve never put a car in storage, so I’m looking for a little guidance.

Am looking for your input on things like:

    • what makes a good place to store a car?
    • what are things to watch out for?
    • what size unit is needed?
    • how much should I expect to pay?

I’ve found spots like: Danbury Self Storage which is a general self-storage place  and Poppy’s Class Car Storage which specialized in car storage – but I’m not sure how to compare them.

I’m interested to hear your ideas on this!

    — Pete

“What if I am not using my seasonal vehicle and wish to retain my license plates?

Request in writing through your insurance carrier “suspension of liability.” Be sure to keep comprehensive coverage during that time which reduces your insurance rate and keeps your vehicle from being reported. While doing this, you must NOT operate your vehicle.”

Bob….I have done that for 15 years and was told by my insurance agent who was told by Travelers Insurance, my insurance company, that you could not do that anymore…..can you send a link to where you found that….I hope I am wrong…now I have not done this in writing for the past ten years and there was never a problem with Travelers or the DMV..I requested in writing the first year and that was it….I have always kept comp on the car……perhaps the DMV is cracking down on this and now the insurance company must make a special report and perhaps never had to before….In fact when I first did this I had the DMV change the date of my emissions from March to August for that very reason that the car was in storage in the winter.     Again I hope I am wrong…………

    Penny

I found this on the Ct DMV website. Q & A section on Insurance.

What if I am not using my seasonal vehicle and wish to retain my license plates?

Request in writing through your insurance carrier “suspension of liability.” Be sure to keep comprehensive coverage during that time which reduces your insurance rate and keeps your vehicle from being reported. While doing this, you must NOT operate your vehicle.

    Hope that helps.

I have been lucky to store mine at home  but when I do this I put it on a trickle charger and wrap a pesticator around it…..keeps mice out of the air filter..those two things may be difficult to do in a public storage unit with no access to electricity….one thing I always did was suspend the liability and just keep comp……I have been doing that for 15 years…However, now the state of Ct DMV has changed its rules about this just this past summer…..Luckily for me I had an agent who informed me about this….one of her other clients was not so lucky…….what happens now is when the liability is suspended on any registered vehicle the insurance company must inform the DMV…..this now generates an appx $200 fine which must be paid before you can insure again…..apparently there is no suspension of registration for vehicles in storage anymore…..there is info on this on the DMV website.   I now insure as a classic with Hagerty for a stated amount and am able to insure year round including liability for a fraction of what the regular insurer was charging……that works for me because I dont drive it that much…..

Probably a little late for this, but I used to store my BRZ in a storage unit over winter. I used Bethel self storage as they were a little cheaper than Danbury.

I used a 10×15 unit but also expect them to be slightly smaller than size stated. Probably not an issue with Miatas as they’re not quite as long, just don’t expect too much extra space.

I would definitely cover the car while in public storage. The doors aren’t quite weather sealed and let in a lot of dust when it gets windy. Normally I’d say no cover but maybe the door on my unit sucked as there was a thick layer after just a few months. I also remove the battery and take it home to keep on trickle charger, as well as throw a bit of fuel stabilizer in the gas. Avoid starting it over winter as it just adds condensation inside the exhaust. Throw a bit of extra air in the tires, as long as they’re not leaking they should be fine.

Oh, and another thing not commonly looked at but can sometimes happen with weird storage places in this area is definitely scope it out first to see if the units have car friendly entry. Don’t know why but some of them have giant 6+ inch curbs outside the 10ft units.

Thanks Dan! About how much do you expect to pay in self-storage?

    Hi Pete,

I store my NB at a self storage. A 10 x 15 works with a few inches to spare. The battery goes on a trickle charger at home. It my be a challenge to find one this year, I’ve talked to two places that I’ve rented from in the past. I’m on a waiting list at both.
