I received the following message from a gentleman in FL last week, and have had a couple conversations with him.  His timeframe is still up in the air, but mid June is his target. At some point , once things get nailed down, I will be organizing some sort of gathering and a ride of some sort….so stay tuned.  i have a couple pics to add here…this is just the text

We are planning a trip that will take us to Cape Fear along our route circumnavigating the United States in a clockwise direction.

We will be traveling in a 1999 Miata and covering somewhere over 9000 miles this summer. I’m an automotive historian and author who has specialized in Healey automobiles for many years. HOWEVER…., as I got older (89) it was less and less fun trying to keep the Healeys on the road, so I moved over to MIATA and my maintenance problems seem to go away.

Along the way we will be presenting a 30 minute Powerpoint show to many Miata Clubs covering:
The development of the early MIATA design and prototype.
    The Trip so far.
The restoration of our Miata from a “junkyard dog” with no engine no transmission, no interior, no top and many panels that were bent….. To an Award winning show car which was  shown at the 2024 Amelia Island Concorde d’ Elegance.

I would certainly appreciate  any information you could provide about your MIATA Club, the location of your meetings and the telephone number for your point of contact for Miata Travelers.

    Many thanks,
    Bill Emerson

That’s amazing! Now that I have that map in my head, I’m not going to be able to stop thinking about it. What a trip! I’m definitely looking forward to meeting them and hopefully going for a local ride.

I’m very impressed at the quality of the restoration that he performed. He must have an amazing amount of talent. And what a trip for him to take of that age we can  only hope they were up for that kind of a trip when we reach 89 years YOUNG! Hopefully it all works out that we get to meet him and see his presentation along with a ride.

FINALLY!!!  I have an update on this gentleman’s adventure. Hour long conversation just concluded.

He will be doing his US Grand Tour starting in FL on July 13 to the New England area first…so counterclockwise around the continental US

On Saturday July 20 he will be going from NJ thru CT to Putnam, CT…family thing. But…lunch with our Clubmembers in Thomaston?…or thereabouts…followed by a drive to Putnam via ‘the Scenic route’

Then he will be off doing other things for a few days in New England, returning to Lime rock on Wednesday about noon…for whatever he and Walt Irvine can cook up, including his 24 minute presentation.  That might be an option for lunchtime on Saturday just for Clubmembers also.

Now for getting a route nailed down so its not just a boring ride out to Putnam.

    Stay tuned!!

A little update on this one…

yes, we are still on for Saturday lunch in Thomaston.

Came up in conversation yesterday about a route from Thomaston to Putnam..

NO HIGHWAY!!…definitely the ‘scenic’ route…probably take at least two hours…closest thing to a highway will be a road with a number
