OK folks…this little get together is only a few weeks away…I will be out working on this ride a lot over the next couple weeks

Some background…this is the ONLY self paced ride we do every year…this is Poker Run XIII…yup, been doing it a while.

This thing works like this…you are given a start point.  Show up with two people in the car, a pen or pencil (old school!!)..clipboard comes in handy…and a willingness to go out for a day of fun and games.  You will be given a set of Route instructions…turn by turn..NO MILEAGES!!!  Can you read and follow directions?  Are you smarter than a 5th grader?  Along the way there will be questions to answer.  this is more to keep the navigator entertained than the driver, because he/she will be busy.  These little rides have a tendency to find some of the more obscure back roads in the state, but don’t worry…NO DIRT ROADS!!  As you go along in the instructions, you will find something that says…TAKE A CARD…so before you do the next instruction you will be looking for a sign on the right side of the road.  Then you stop, safely, and on the sign there will be a ziploc bag.  in the bag will be sealed envelopes with a playing card.  There will be 6 on the route and you will get one at the beginning.  End of the ride the person with the best poker hand gets the cheezy trophy.  Simple?…well…that remains to be seen.  At the end we will go over the questions.  anything you see along the route is fair game for a question, and some will be in the form of a riddle.

Any questions?…if you sign up…PLEASE SHOW UP!!!  this is critical.  I have to know EXACTLY how many cars are coming because I go out the day before to place the signs, and I only put enough cards in the bags for the number of cars.  so cutoff for this event is…FRIDAY AUGUST 14 AT 8pm

This is a rain or shine activity…trust me…

your Miata will not melt or the color wash off if it gets wet, and we have seen some wet ones in the past.

Stay tuned for further info as the date nears

last year this ride was on the east side of I-91…so this year it will be on the west side of I-91.

    Start point?…not a clue… yet…end point?…will only be revealed in the instructions

    WELL…THIS WEEK HAS BEEN INTERESTING…

Tropical storm did a number on the state…and my poker run route.  I have laid out the route and run it a couple of times prior to the storm.  As always, it needs refinement.  Found a glitch in my directions yesterday that I fixed…but I cann ot fix closed roads due to storm damage.I will keep on top of this as the week goes on and if I have to make changes, I will.  Hopefully the roads will be completely cleared by next sunday

One thing I do have is the actual address in Woodbury of the starting point

    Woodbury Pizza parking lot

    689 Main St

    Woodbury, CT 06798

Very conveniently located on Rt 6 where it meets Rt 64

Drivers meeting will be at 10 am

so that means show up a little before that.  Long range weather forecast is showing no rin in the forecast for the weekend, but it will be a bit warm.  As always, that is subject to change…but this is a RAIN OR SHINE event

I will have Angela send ot a message to the general membership with the latest details and a reminder that the signup closes on Friday Aug 14 at 8pm.  if you register to attend, I expect you to show up, or it messes up the card count that I put out on the route the day before.

I will keep you posted here in this thread if there are any updates worth sharing

    Joe

Things are looking a little better…more people getting their power back and roads cleared

Car count is now at 18…and I have a text message that might result in two more cars…25 cars would be pretty cool…but under the circumstances, I will take what I can get!!

Remember folks…all the state mandated protocols will be in place…masks for all when outside your car…mask in the restaurant unless eating..etc..etc…you all know how it works by now.  I am just thankful we have a place to end that will take our whole group

The list gets a little longer…

I just ran the route today…all roads are clear…and you will see just how bad some of the areas got hit.  Some of the downed trees are cut right at the roadside just to get the road clear.  there is still a LOT of cleanup left to do. Mileage is just a tad over 100…like 101 miles.  It took me just shy of 3 1/2 hours…stopped twice for beverage and bio break…so plan accordingly. Driver meeting at 10am…first car out ASAP afterwards

the endpoint is ready foir us on Sunday…separate room for our group…separate checks…

if you are on this list…PLEASE SHOW UP

Final run thru completed…a couple refinements to the route instructions…only for clarity and add a couple questions

Discovered one thing today…there is a difference in the mileage logged between the NB and the ND…I kinda forgot that the NB reads off because of the trans/rear end combo.  actual mileage is more like 95…but it still takes over 3 hours!!

    See you all tomorrow

Well…we all saw the same weather forecast last night that I did, and they got it wrong!!…what was supposed to start in the afternoon started early…oh well.

the thing that was really outstanding from my perspective…EVERYONE SHOWED UP!!!…that is pretty cool, and I truly appreciate you all coming out under less than ideal conditions for my annual Poke Run.

thank you all…33 cars!!…best turnout in a while.  It seemed like everyone had a good time…Ed and Regina celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary by going out for a Miata ride…Regina all decked out in a white dress and veil!!

Now..if I could only figger out who has sign #6??…last one you all got a card at, but I did not get it back at the restaurant and it was not there when I went back to get it.

The Benton Perspective, Lucky 13 Poker Run

Some people say #13 is unlucky, and some say it is lucky. Your glass is half full or it’s half empty, right? It’s a matter of perspective. Joe Wall has been a steady producer of Poker Runs. This is Joe’s specialty. His other is running the NMC (Nutmeg Miata Club, for you newbies). Enough about Joe. The 13th Annual Poker Run had bright skies and warm temps forecasted for days ahead, so of course the day started cloudy and cool and it rained and spritzed for the entire time we rode the roads. That is not actually a complaint. He gave us smooth highways to run followed by roads that tested every nut and bolt in our little sports cars. He ran us in circles so that some of us we saw a’comin’ while we zipped past them a’goin’. At one point Joe parked his new orange Miata, to greet us, no doubt, and we got to see him four times smiling and waving (and he ain’t that pretty). If I had to go around one more time I’d of felt like Charlie on the MTA. Due to certain interpretations of the six pages of notes he handed to the co-pilots, our 95 mile ride became…well…longer for some. But the ups and downs of hills and the curves that wouldn’t stop tested us as well, and we all came out just fine. We celebrated in the reconstituted Painted Pony Restaurant in Bethlehem, Oh Little Town Of, with good food and loud conversation. A good, good day…really! Thanks, Joe.

Took another ride on this route yesterday with a few Clubmembers…one that was not able to make the date last week…

    but we did it BACKWARDS!!!

Trust me ..its a LOT harder than one might think…juggling route instructions…reading from the bottom up…working the radio…oh yeah…driving too!!…only missed one turn
