NC with AKE (card looking FOB) need another key- Suggestions on a place in CT

Just picked up a NC with the AKE and 1 credit card looking FOB. It looks like this is a dealer thing but I figured I’d ask here first before taking that plunge.

Any local lock smiths I can go to for this to save a few bucks?

Was going to go to Modern in Thomaston for this if I had to hit a dealer.

So after a few calls and quite the sticker shock I’ve decided to get 2 of the physical (emergency) keys and have them programmed by a locksmith. The price for a full fob with the key insert and programming was over $500 at a dealer, this should be less than $200.

My thought is that we’ll use the stock fob until it fails, when/if it does we have the emergency/insert key and the two copies we are going to get made.  Similar to what was mentioned here- https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=640781

We miss out on remote lock/unlock/panic but as far as I can tell that’s it. Sure we’d have to use the key in the ignition but I think it’s a fair option based on the prices.

With only one Keyless Entry Transmitter either a dealer or a locksmith that does automotive key/remote programing is needed.

If ordering from a dealer they will use your VIN to determine the correct part #.

Pretty sure this type of ‘transmitter’ programing is basically accessing the key module and telling it to recognize the signal from the key/remote. A used functioning remote should work, but the physical emergency key has to be cut to fit your car, then ‘programed’.

Locksmith/dealer should also be able to ‘unlearn’ any lost/stolen keys.

Quite a few posts on Miata.net and it seems I have to go to the dealer or a locksmith, figured I’d ask around locally before taking that plunge. Can’t use the car anyway until next week thanks to CT DMVs appointment only system.
