I’m looking to dig into replacing my rotting out exhaust at this weekend’s tech session… everything after the exhaust manifold. I have most everything, but I am looking for guidance about proper nuts for the manifold studs, and nuts / bolts for both sides of the new cat. A lot of the info on miata.net seems contradictory.

Sizes? I think the nuts for downpipe to manifold are M10x1.50? Cat bolts… I guess I can just see what fits in the holes.

    Material? Stainless?

Nut style? “Stover” deforming/locking? Regular nuts with lock washers?

Any input appreciated. Hopefully I can source the proper items locally, or with quick Amazon shipping, in time for this weekend. Thanks in advance, and for any help with this project this weekend.

(By the way, car is ’96 NA 1.8)

I can only tell you what I did, I’m no expert on exhaust parts. I used stainless because that is what my replacement parts were made of. But I can tell you that they have started rusting already. With the heat cycles and abuse they see it’s unrealistic to think otherwise. If you’re feeling flush… no harm. And if you find yourself needing to take it apart in say 2 or 3 years you will be thankful that you did, much more than that and I suspect it won’t make much difference. That’s my take, but miata.net probably has better arguments.

Thanks Dave… did you use standard nuts with lock washers, or did you use the special self-locking nuts with the “deformed” threads that are anti-reversing?

I believe I used plain old lock washers.
