Above All State Park (1st Park!)

The drive to the park was very nice, up a neat switchback hill, we live about 15 minutes away and had NO idea this place existed (part of what makes this ‘challenge’ so cool. Good to note that the waypoint on the GPS was off, it took us to the edge of the woods across from someone’s driveway and after driving up and down the road for awhile, a quick google search revealed there is NO marked entrance to the park. There is a green gate across the road from the Warren Land Trust Willis Tanner Preserve Hiking Trail Sign. Beyond the green gate is a walking trail that leads to some ruins of the land’s past use.

Mt. Tom State Park (2nd park) April 22rd 2024.

We love Mt. Tom and definitely recommend adding this to the list of planned parks this season. Regardless of where you’re coming from the road to get here will be a joy to drive. There is a beautiful lake and beach for water enjoyment with grills for public use throughout the season. The hike to the top of Mt. Tom is not too long nor too difficult, it has a beautiful opening with a lookout tower that provides a very rewarding view.

Lovers Leap State Park (3rd park) 4/27/24

The park is in New Milford which we happened to drive by on the way to the New Milford HS Car Show, we stopped on the way back home and glad we did. We learned a bit and got to enjoy the amazing view from the high exposed cliff face where the main trail ends (maybe 3/4 of a mile). Plenty of parking and paths/trails to explore.

    Hopeville St Park , Sat. May 4th , Park#1

Our first St. Park for the Challenge was way over near the RI line in Griswald CT.  We stopped by Hopeville Pond St Park on the way back from RI.  Terry and I have been to summer picnics at the pond with her family members that live in the area.  Great place for a picnic and a swim.  We’ve never camped there but they have many water side campsites.
That part of our state has lots of small towns with plenty of zoomy back roads and great scenery.   Meandering our way towards Portland, we took routes 138,165, 97 and all sorts of curvey roads with our GPS set to “shortest distance “  If you can find WHERE “WALDO RD” IS and keep heading west you’ll enjoy one of the twistiest hill climbs ever 😎.

I just added an Interactive State Park Map to the challenge info and rules page.  It show the location of 102 CT State Parks.  Click on the tent icon for park name and address.

Click to check out the interactive map

BTW there are at least a dozen state parks in the vicinity of  Saturday’s Tech Day

Gillette castle state park (1st state park)

    Went on 5/18/2023

Usually I go here to enjoy the castle and the views of the CT river. This time went to the walking paths of the old railroad and went through the tunnel. Took the short ferry ride and lucky of timing the Essex steam train was passing as we were sitting at the railroad crossing. Thanks for the suggestion Peter.
