Are You Ready for the 2026 Electric Miata?

Mazda has confirmed the next-generation 2026 MX-5 Miata will be electrified. But the automaker stopped short of saying what form the electrification will take—fully EV, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid. Mazda’s entire lineup is slated to go at least partially electric by 2030, which means if the next-gen Miata is to survive past then—and we certainly hope it does—this is a necessary step in the legendary sports car’s evolution.

I’m thinking hybrid. People always have to stop and plug in all electric cars when on long trips. Who wants to do that.

I could get on-board with hybrid. A low-placed battery might lower the center of gravity. Also, if you place it right, they could get close to 50/50 weight distribution. A little extra pep wouldn’t hurt, either.

I don’t know too much about hybrids, so just spit-balling, but I could see hybrid being able to improve certain aspects.

<p style=”text-align: center;”>If I had to guess, I’d say hybrid.  Full electric would be too much of a weight sacrifice for a car whose whole point is lightness.  I’d be interested maybe.. if I could afford it, which I can’t… My current Miata purchase pretty much guaranteed my retirement will be out on the streets collecting bottles somewhere…</p>

I would definitely consider it, but probably not Ver.1.0

I’d test drive one, just hope the heavy batteries dont mess with the handling and overall spirit of the Miata.

Electric Miata? NEVER!!  My cars have to burn something.
